Ready for Anything: Inside a Mass Casualty Drill at Texas Health Dallas

Texas Health Dallas is one of the region’s leading acute care hospitals - and like all great healthcare institutions, they prepare relentlessly for the moments they hope never come. Each year, their emergency team runs a Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) drill: a full-scale simulation designed to test every layer of their emergency response system. When they decided it was time to finally have these drills professionally documented, they called me. This was the first time in the history of their annual drill that a photographer had ever been brought in - and I was honored to be that person.

Documenting a live Mass Casualty Incident drill presents unique challenges - the environment is intentionally chaotic, waves of simulated patients arrive in rapid succession, and the clinical teams are moving fast with no time to pause. There are no second chances when the drill is running. You either get the moment or you don’t.

I always arrive with a “story-first” mindset, with an eye toward the end goal. I work unobtrusively as teams respond in real time, and my nimble gear setup allows me to move quickly through a rapidly changing environment. Having experience in high-pressure medical settings means I can anticipate the decisive moment - the glance between colleagues, the focused hands, the quiet intensity that tells the whole story in a single frame.

My passion for medical photography runs deep. There is something profound about being trusted inside these spaces - where preparation meets purpose, and where the work being done, even in simulation, carries the weight of real lives.
